Kitchen Remodeling

Kitchen remodeling is a process of upgrading a kitchen with a fresh new look.  There are a number of processes involved in kitchen remodeling. The three main processes are planning, demolition and rebuilding, with engineering and structural modification being required on occasion.

Planning:
With kitchen remodeling, planning is the act or process of designing and drawing up a plan which represents how the new kitchen will be laid out. The plan, if one wishes to keep price down; involves working within the confines of the existing walls. So the first step in kitchen remodeling is to measure the existing walls and then draw up a rough plan that represents the present wall lengths and locations. The next step, in following a cost approach, is to draw the current location of the range, the refrigerator, and all other electrical appliances; so that the new appliances can be installed in their current locations. When a sink is to be centered on an existing window; the center line measurement of the window should be included on the plan so that the kitchen sink can be centered on it. The new kitchen remodeling plan, once finished, will act as a layout for the remodeling contractor and will depict the exact location of all new cabinets, countertops and appliances. Other existing fixtures or items may also be included on the plan, when they affect the kitchen remodeling, or, when they are to be changed.

Demolition:
Once the kitchen remodeling plan has been completed the next phase involves demolition. With kitchen remodeling; demolition involves removing the existing countertops, the existing cabinets, and the existing appliances. In some cases kitchen remodeling can involve removing the wallboard, the flooring, and other items depending on what is needed and what the final kitchen remodeling is to become.

Rebuilding:
When it comes time, in kitchen remodeling, to rebuild a kitchen, where the drywall has been removed, blocking should be installed in the correct locations within the walls so that when the cabinets are to be installed, they can be easily secured to the new blocking. If removing the drywall was not in the budget; fastening to what you have to work with is customary.

Moving an electrical fixture or an outlet can be necessary when the kitchen remodeling plan calls for the relocation of an appliance. Should, for example, the kitchen remodeling call for the relocation of a range, where the existing electrical wire servicing the previous range location cannot be moved to the new location because of its length; a new wire may have to be installed all the way from the electrical service box through to the new range location. If the new range calls for additional amperage to be drawn or if building code has changed; a new heavier duty wire and breaker may have to be installed. In some cases a junction box may be installed; which will reduce the costs significantly. The electrical for the range hood, which goes over top the range, will also have to be installed in the new location as well. Also, when a range hood has been and is to continue to blow its exhaust out to the outside; the exhaust location will also have to be relocated to the new planned location as well. So as you can see; moving an appliance can involve a lot of labor and a lot of material, which adds up to increased cost.

Following the blocking and electrical modifications the next step is to repair the drywall if it only requires repair or install all new drywall and finish it according to what had been previously planned. The finished drywall should then be painted a color which should follow the desired scheme and flow of the new kitchen and the adjoining rooms.

When performing kitchen remodeling the correct approach to what should be performed next is determined by the circumstances present. This applies to the previous thus far kitchen remodeling article; circumstances change the process, and these kitchen remodeling circumstances can be known beforehand or may become known during the kitchen remodeling process as they are uncovered and become visibly known.

The next desired job would be to install the new floor so that the cabinets can be installed over top of it. This can be performed as long as it being installed 1st does not raise the height of the cabinets and therefore the backsplash to an elevation that encroaches into the existing outlets.
